Artist Statement

The series consists of nine images that capture different moments during the nightlife. Furthermore, it emphasises the irony of the city being left empty due to quarantine and social distancing. The work focuses on illuminated lights, specifically red and blue, that are shared across through images in different settings. The lights bring out lively energy to audiences despite the lack of human presence in reality. This exploration allows me to engage more intimately as well as allowing audiences to be aware of the space and time that we currently live in.

The work initiated through an interest in night lights on streets and alleyways and was further explored after a realisation of the potential relationship between lights and people. The main inspiration was the 'Electronic Superhighway' by Nam June Paik; the use of vibrant coloured lights grabs your attention immediately while subtle details of faces and texts are shown through small screens. This method allow my series to deliver different moods through lighting and composition. Both self-portraits were captured inside a residential property, while remainders were taken outside during the exploration of different sites.
